What To Expect With Braces?
Everyone deserves to have a beautiful smile. It can boost your self-esteem and leave a great impression. Orthodontic treatment is the best way for many people to achieve their ideal smile. Our teen patients frequently benefit from our orthodontic services and our team’s experience. While some teenagers may experience discomfort when their braces are first applied, this is normal for most patients and is only temporary while your teeth begin to shift. Remember that the advantages of braces far outweigh the brief adjustment period, and you are now on your way to achieving your new smile!
One of the biggest adjustments our patients need to make when getting braces is their new oral hygiene routine. Brushing your teeth while having braces is similar to brushing without them. After all, you’ll still have to brush and floss your teeth. However, doing a good job is more important than ever. Food particles and plaque have many more areas to get stuck while you wear braces.
Thanks to significant advances in modern technology, there are now many different types of braces to choose from. Dr. Labbe takes the time to get to know his patients and their needs to assist them in making the best treatment decisions.
Benefits of Braces
Many teenagers may find the idea of wearing braces embarrassing. However, there are several advantages to getting braces during adolescence. First, their teeth are still growing and shifting during adolescence, so this is the ideal time to correct any alignment issues. Second, braces can promote good oral health by making proper brushing and flossing easier after treatment is complete. Last but not least, teenagers who get braces are at a lower risk for orthodontic issues such as gum disease, tooth decay, cavities, and bone erosion. With braces, your teen will have:
- Improved speech
- Lips and jaw more proportionate to their face
- Improved digestion
Not to mention the confidence boost having a stellar smile provides!
Types Of Braces
Traditional Braces
The most commonly used type of braces is traditional metal braces, which have been made more comfortable than ever before. Metal braces are made of high-quality stainless steel and use metal brackets and archwires to straighten your teeth. Colored elastics (rubber bands) can be added to metal braces for a more unique and vibrant smile.
Ceramic Braces
Ceramic braces are made of tooth-colored materials and are far less noticeable on your teeth than metal braces. As a result, ceramic braces are primarily used on older teenagers and adult patients with cosmetic concerns. While they are less visible, ceramic braces require greater attention to oral hygiene since they are larger and more brittle than metal braces. For these reasons, ceramic braces are more commonly placed on upper front teeth than lower teeth.
