What Types of Retainers Can I Choose From
At Labbe Family Orthodontics, we offer three main types of custom retainers. We'll help you pick the one that fits your lifestyle and goals best to ensure your smile stays perfect for a lifetime.
Clear Retainers
These are made of a smooth, clear plastic that fits snugly over your teeth. They look a lot like Invisalign® clear aligners and are nearly invisible, making them a popular choice for a discreet, comfortable look.
Wired Hawley Retainers
The Hawley retainer uses a thin metal wire and a sturdy acrylic base that sits against the roof of your mouth or behind your lower teeth. They are incredibly durable and allow us to make small adjustments if your teeth need a tiny tune-up later on.
Bonded Retainers
Also known as permanent or fixed retainers, these consist of a thin, custom-fitted wire bonded to the back of your teeth. Because they stay in place 24/7, you never have to worry about forgetting to wear them or losing your retainer!
How Do I Care for My Removable Retainer
Keeping your retainer clean is just as important as wearing it. Here are some quick tips to keep it in tip-top shape:
- Clean it every day: Use a soft toothbrush and mild soap. Avoid toothpaste because it can be too scratchy for the retainer material.
- Keep it away from heat: Hot water or a hot car can warp the plastic, so keep things cool.
- Use your case: If it’s not in your mouth, it should be in the case. This prevents it from getting lost or accidentally tossed in the trash.
- Watch out for pets: Dogs love to chew on retainers, so keep yours out of reach!
